Mantle Geochronology and the Age of the Sub-cratonic Lithosphere

چکیده

Introduction High precision in situ analysis of trace-element compositions and isotope ratios has revolutionised geochronology and geochemistry over the past decade. Most of the advances are due to the proliferation of laser-ablation microprobe inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and the rapid development of the multi-collector (MC-) ICP-MS. One of the main benefits of in situ analysis is that it allows the isotopic data to be interpreted in a microstructural context and to be integrated with geochemical data from other microanalytical techniques. This approach not only provides age information but helps to constrain the nature of the source rocks and to unravel the processes that have subsequently modified it.

African lithospheric structure, volcanism, and topography

In Africa volumetrically minor, mid-plate volcanic rocks of Cenozoic age are concentrated in areas affected by Pan-African (500 _+ 150 Ma) crustal reactivation, and are virtually absent from cratonic areas. We interpret this as indicating that Pan-African areas are underlain by fertile lithospheric mantle and cratons by depleted lithospheric mantle, and propose a model to explain both the distr...

Teleseismic imaging of the Slave craton and implications for the assembly of cratonic lithosphere

In this dissertation, I investigate the assembly and evolution of the Archean cratonic lithosphere by using two complementary seismological methods to image the lithospheric structure of the Slave craton in Canada. First, I perform surface wave tomographic inversions to constrain the depth dependence of Rayleigh wave phase velocity, shear wave velocity, and azimuthal anisotropy of the Slave cra...

Upper mantle structure of the Saharan Metacraton

The 500,000 km Saharan Metacraton in northern Africa (metacraton refers to a craton that has been mobilized during an orogenic event but that is still recognisable through its rheological, geochronological and isotopic characteristics) is an Archean–Paleoproterozoic cratonic lithosphere that has been destabilized during the Neoproterozoic. It extends from the Arabian–Nubian Shield in the east t...

Is the African cratonic lithosphere wet or dry?

Thick continental lithosphere (tectosphere) beneath African cratons has been stable for ~2.5 b.y. despite its mechanical interaction with sublithospheric mantle. Water is known to have signifi cant infl uence on mechanical stiffness, and the depletion of water is often considered to be a key to preserving the thick lithosphere. Although water-rich environments indicated by the present water con...

3-D shear wave radially and azimuthally anisotropic velocity model of the North American upper mantle

S U M M A R Y Using a combination of long period seismic waveforms and SKS splitting measurements, we have developed a 3-D upper-mantle model (SAWum_NA2) of North America that includes isotropic shear velocity, with a lateral resolution of ∼250 km, as well as radial and azimuthal anisotropy, with a lateral resolution of ∼500 km. Combining these results, we infer several key features of lithosph...
